What is now the Lauwersmeer used to be the Lauwerszee. Man-made hills, known as 'wierden' in Groningen, protect the area from high water. The park is near Vierhuizen, a genuine 'wierdedorp,' or mound village. While exploring the area, you'll notice the diverse landscape of water, open fields, and woods. The nature around Lauwersmeer is so unique that it has been named a National Park. Near Lauwersoog, there are several beaches perfect for warm days. Would you rather go boating? There are places to rent boats nearby. Or take a day trip to Schiermonnikoog, a Wadden Island, easily reachable by ferry. When night falls, enjoy a new adventure. The night skies at Lauwersmeer are exceptionally dark, making it an ideal spot for stargazing from special observation towers. Maybe you'll even see a shooting star!
